How To Survive a Heart Attack

When Alone

Submitted By: Tom & Dorris Thomson

Since many people are alone without help, when they
suffer a heart attack, the person whose heart is beating
improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10
seconds left before losing consciousness.

However, these victims can help themselves by
coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.

A deep breath should be taken before each cough,
and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when
producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated
about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives,
or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and
coughing adds pressure on the heart, also helping it to
regain normal rhythm.  In this way, heart attack
victims can get to a hospital.

Is it a Stroke?.....

Is it a Stroke?

Submitted By: Tom & Dorris Thomson

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster.
The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when
people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize stroke
by asking three simple requests:

1. Ask the individual to smile .

2. Ask him or her to raise both arms.

3. Ask the person to speak a simple sentence.

Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis
and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

All About Giving....
Posted 12-27-04

Giving

South Haven Area Senior Services is a not-for-profit organization that cares for those in need in Western Michigan.  As the elderly population continues to grow at a time when State and Federal funding is limited it increases our need to bring in needed funds through a Fund Development program.  All funds contributed to Senior Services go directly into programs and services.

The vast majority of those we serve are at, or below the Federal Poverty level and therefore have little left to contribute toward the services they need.  Your gift can benefit those in need.  It can help provide a hot meal to an elder, provide them a ride to get their medicine, help provide them with personal care they can no longer do themselves and give them an opportunity to visit with friends at the Senior Center instead of being alone in their home or apartment. Your gift is also tax deductible.

The Many Ways to Give

There are many ways to give a gift and there are also many different types of gifts you can make.  The most common is a cash gift; however, gifts may be given in the form of personal property, real estate, stocks and insurance policies.  The giving of an appreciated asset can save the donor many dollars in taxes.  If you are considering property gifts, charitable gift annuity or stocks and mutual funds, please contact us at 269-637-3607 and consult with your tax advisor or expert to see how this, or any contribution might affect your personal tax situation.

Outright Gifts – A gift can be made by cash, check or major credit card.  These gifts are invaluable to Senior Services because they give the agency the ability to meet immediate demands as crucial needs arise.  All gifts are recognized with an official tax receipt for your records and recognition is provided in our Annual Report.  To make a gift by using a credit card simply log onto www.networkforgood.org  and follow the instructions to contribute to South Haven Area Senior Services.  Checks can be mailed to:

South Haven Area Senior Services,
220 Broadway, South Haven, MI 49090.

Memorial Gifts – Friends and relatives are welcome to make donations to Senior Services in memory of a friend or loved one. Gift cards are sent to the family of the individual being remembered and their names are placed on a Memory Plaque displayed at the Warren Senior Center.

Bequests – A bequest in a will provides a gift to Senior Services that will perpetuate your interest in the future of our organization and those we serve.

Property Gifts, Charitable Gift Annuity and Insurance policies – these are excellent contributions allowing donors tax benefits, in some cases guaranteed income for the rest of your life and provides funding for the future of this organization. For information on these giving opportunities call Senior Services at 269-637-3607.

"Heads Up" Program
Posted 12-13-04

South Haven Area Senior Services recently joined
with the Region 4 Area Agency on Aging
and the Human Services Collaborative Council to offer the
"Heads Up" Program, a Falls Prevention Program.

Falls can have painful and costly consequences.
Falls can seem funny in the movies, but in real life they can involve considerable pain, great cost, long treatment and rehabilitation time.

The "Heads Up" Program provides education about falls prevention and provides a falls assessment to determine an individual's risk of falling. The program also provides information about working with a physician in relation to preventing falls, about improving one's balance and making the home "fall" safe. A resource directory for fitness programs aimed at improving balance and flexibility is also available.

To receive information about "Heads Up" or to schedule a presentation for a church organization or community group, call Sandra Tyrrell at 269-637-3607, or toll free at 1-866-627-8904 or call the Senior Information Line at 800-654-2810.
