Health & Fitness...                         Posted  2-19-05

Getting serious about your health and fitness.

YOUR LIFE DEPENDS UPON IT!

The trend is good here in the United States. More and more Americans, encouraged by the good example of their physicians, are becoming increasingly serious about their level of physical fitness, good health and living habits that lean toward a lifestyle of disease prevention. THE KEY?… You must take control of your own health. No one else will.

If you stand in the road at night wearing a black outfit, you are going to get run over. If you use tobacco, soon you will develop serious non-reversible medical problems. If you overeat, are sedentary and become overweight, you are going to develop cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease, develop bad joints and MAYBE develop diabetes.
GET THE IDEA?

Take care of your body as well as you would your car. Cut down on animal fats, saturated fats and fried foods…well, you know what I mean. Be good to yourself...and honest, you will live longer and better…and yes, LOOK BETTER!

Think twice before you reach for that donut or slice of pie. Your body will appreciate your concern. If you keep moving in the right direction, you will find your clothes fit better.
And isn’t that what you want?

If you want a face lift...all you have to do is smile…!

Campaign Kickoff...
Posted  2-14-05

Campaign Kickoff:  February 14, 2005
with a general announcement to Community

We are pleased to announce a most energetic and highly
successful kickoff to our 2005
“Give from the Heart”
Fundraising Campaign

Though we're still in the middle of February it seemed a bit like
the middle of "March Madness" for we led off with a dazzling
3 point play and never looked back.

Rev. Jeffrey Dick, Board President,
scored the first point by explaining
the Boards involvement with the
campaign along with ideas as to
the future path of SHASS.

Sandra Tyrrell, Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator, scored the second point with a comprehensive look at where SHASS has come from and how we have evolved and arrived at our current standing within our service area.

Jennifer Culver, SHASS Director, completed
the 3 point play with a forward looking
glimpse as to what the future of SHASS will
be as we move into our second decade of
service and become ever increasingly
involved within our expanded areas.
This is indeed an exciting time for SHASS.

Lighthouse Steppers &
Lighter Club
Posted  2-14-05

SHASS steps up to the new year with emphasis on fitness

If losing weight is one of your goals for
the new year, SHASS can help you "lighten up"
with a new fitness program it will initiate in February.

SHASS recently received a grant
from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
for implementing this walking/nutrition program called,
"Adding Life to Your Years, Senior Healthy LifeWays...
The Lighthouse Steppers and Lighter Club."

The overall goal of the Lighthouse Steppers and the Lighter Club is to create
an innovative senior wellness program for those 50 and over that addresses
the increased need for physical activity, good nutrition and losing body fat.

Both the Lighthouse Steppers and Lighter Club
will start up in February to coincide with
people's new year healthier lifestyle resolutions.

Specific activities for the Lighthouse Steppers will include walking
groups that meet the needs of the entire SHASS service area.
There will be specific indoor and outdoor walking areas
for walkers who will meet daily at a time to be determined.
There will also be two treadmills available at the Warren Senior Center. The goal of Lighthouse Steppers is to encourage seniors to walk
5,000 steps, 2.5 miles or 30 minutes per day (20 days per month).
The Lighthouse Steppers will take part in special events each year
such as walking in the parade during the Blueberry Festival.
Participants will track their progress through a logbook
and pedometer given to them from SHASS.
Those who walk regularly for twelve weeks
will receive a Certificate of Achievement.

The overall objectives of the Lighter Club (People can belong to both the Lighthouse Steppers and the Lighter Club, or just one or the other,) is to provide peer support for dieting seniors, a monthly weigh-in clinic, a series of nutritional classes such as good nutrition, dieting tips and techniques
and effective lifestyle changes. The Lighter Club will meet weekly in two different locations to accommodate the entire SHASS service area.

SHASS staff members are stepping up to the task of working out the details for carrying out these lifestyle programs, so more information
will be forth coming. SHASS will implement a nominal membership fee
for the two programs to help sustain them beyond the grant year.
SHASS will incorporate any other costs into
the regular operating budget of the organization.

(*You can join both the Steppers and the Lighter Club, or just one or the other.)

Yearly membership fee:

50 and over: $10 for one program or $15 for both Steppers & Lighter Club

Under 50: $20 for one program or $30 for both Steppers & Lighter Club

(*The program is primarily for seniors 50 and over.)

For more information, call SHASS at (269) 637-3607 or toll free at (866) 627-8904.

You may register over the phone, and mail in your membership check to SHASS at 220 Broadway, South Haven, MI 49090. When we receive your check, we’ll complete your registration. Organized walking and support group will begin in March.

This program was made possible through a grant from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of MI Healthy Aging Grant Program.

Please call the SHASS office at 269-637-3607 for further details.
We will look forward to hearing from you.
