Emergency Medical Cards This card will provide immediate important information to paramedics or hospital personnel should you need emergency care. South Haven Area Senior Services (SHASS) provides emergency medical cards as one of its many free services to seniors. SHASS is expanding this service to Covert area seniors in partnership with Covert Township Fire and Ambulance Service. The Emergency Medical Card program will begin in the Covert area on April 24.
Shirley Culver is grateful to have her emergency medical card. “This is a valuable service especially for women living alone. I’m going to recommend it to my friend.” R.N. Ruth Adkin takes pride in assisting seniors with emergency medical cards, updating them and creating new ones. “I update the cards yearly. If clients go to the hospital or have any other health changes, I tell them to call Senior Services, and I will do new ones,” says Adkin. Adkin conducts home interviews usually through referrals from SHASS Care Watch coordinators or through requests from family members or clients. Any person 60 and over residing in the SHASS service area is eligible for a free card. Adkin lists only vital meds seniors may be taking such as lanoxin, coumadin, plavix, insulin, coreg and dliantin. She also includes a brief history of the senior’s health. After Adkin fills out an emergency medical card, she places it in a plastic sleeve and hangs it on the back of the front door in the senior’s home. “I keep files on everyone who has a card,” says Adkin. She estimates from her records that she has 200-250 people who have emergency medical cards in the SHASS service area. For more information about securing emergency medical cards, or other SHASS services, call SHASS, weekdays, at 637-3607 or toll free at 1-866-627-8904.
